He was a minister of the imperial court during the Qianlong period and a highly accomplished calligrapher in calligraphy during the Qing Dynasty. He is regarded as a representative figure of calligraphy by later scholars. Liu Yong, along with Weng Fanggang, Prince Cheng, and Tie Bao, were revered as the "Four Masters of the Qing Dynasty" in terms of their calligraphy skills by later generations.
