 Hits:5917 Date:2018-10-10

China's Grand Canal, including the Sui and Tang Dynasties Grand Canal, the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal and the East Zhejiang Grand Canal, is not only the representative work of China's ancient canal, but also the longest artificial canal in the world. Like the Great Wall, it is a rare ancient engineering miracle created by the Chinese people. In the long historical years, the Grand Canal connects the five major water systems of Haihe River, Yellow River, Huaihe River, Yangtze River and Qiantang River. It constitutes the main water transport artery connecting the whole country in ancient China. It plays an important role in maintaining national unity and promoting economic and cultural exchanges. It has become one of the symbols of Chinese civilization. On June 22, 2014, China's "Grand Canal" successfully applied for world cultural heritage.

The excavation of the grand canal can be traced back to the Han Ditch in the spring and Autumn period of the 5th century BC, that is, the ancient Han Ditch in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province today. It was formed in the 7th century (Sui Dynasty) when China's feudal society became strong and developed in the 13th century (Yuan Dynasty). The grand canal runs from north to South and connects east to west. It spans different geographical units such as Hangjiahu Plain, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Plain and North China Plain. It is an important area for the formation and development of Chinese civilization. It involves a large number of heritages, a high level, a high density and a long time. Its historical and cultural value is rarely comparable.

General Secretary Xi made two important instructions on promoting the protection and utilization of the Grand Canal cultural belt. He pointed out that it is an important task made by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in the new era to deeply tap the rich historical and cultural resources carried by the Grand Canal, comprehensively protect, inherit and make good use of this precious heritage left by our ancestors, and build it into a bright business card to display Chinese civilization Major decisions and deployment for the future. The "Tong · Rong - China Grand Canal Cultural Exhibition", jointly launched by Jiangsu Provincial Department of culture (Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of cultural relics) and Yangzhou Museum, comprehensively interprets the China Grand Canal from three parts: history, city and heritage, so as to better protect and make use of the canal cultural heritage and further promote the construction of the Grand Canal cultural belt.
