From the beginning of the 3rd century to the end of the 6th century, the Six Dynasties of Soochow, Eastern Jin, song, Qi, Liang and Chen successively established their capitals in Nanjing, known as the "Six Dynasties" in history. For more than three hundred years, Nanjing became the center of the feudal dynasty of the Han nationality and ruled half of China. The economy and culture of the South developed rapidly, creating a brilliant "Six Dynasties civilization". The social environment had an impact on people's life in the Six Dynasties, and the social atmosphere and humanistic spirit were reflected in clothing, food, housing, transportation and aesthetics.

"Elegant Six Dynasties - Nanjing Six Dynasties History and culture exhibition" focuses on more than 160 sets of cultural relics of the Six Dynasties unearthed in Nanjing. The main parts of the exhibition are "people's life of the Six Dynasties" and "people's aesthetics of the Six Dynasties". The former systematically shows the daily life of people in the Six Dynasties from six aspects: clothing, eating customs, residence, daily furnishings, transportation and entertainment. The latter shows the aesthetics of the people of the Six Dynasties from six aspects: the demeanor of the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the spread of Buddhism, extraordinary painting, the sanctity of calligraphy, stone carving art and exotic treasures, and depicts the cultural scene of the Six Dynasties with outstanding achievements and beauty.
